Abstract

Fifty years ago I was fascinated, like all the boys of my generation, by the conquest of space. The explorations of the Russians and Americans with futuristic spaceships and fearless astronauts created a feeling of omnipotence. Humankind really seemed to have no limits. The conquest of the Moon in 1969 was experienced by everyone as a dream come true. Our satellite, which until then had mainly struck our imagination as the protagonist of romantic songs, suddenly became close and ... accessible. The “small step of one man” projected all of us, with our imagination, to great leaps into space, thus creating great expectations and paving the way in what seemed to all of us, at that time, the inevitable direction: the space revolution. Incredible adventures were being drawn in the minds of us kids, for we were convinced that in the following decades humankind would travel in space onboard comfortable spaceships with mesmerizing shapes.
