Abstract

The changing monetary standards of the United States and Britain are presented alongside one another for the full 1791–present time span. The implications for the dollar-sterling exchange rate—fixed or floating—are outlined. Paper-standard periods can involve freely floating exchange rates, managed floating, exchange-market intervention points, or pegged rate via exchange control and other restrictions.
