Abstract

This chapter examines the social and economic context in which many low- and modest-income urban Canadians live: the inner city, and increasingly, less-accessible parts of the inner suburbs. Evidence shows that modest-income neighborhoods in Canada are more disadvantaged than peers in other Canadian neighborhoods, but the gap is smaller than that between modest-income and better-off communities in the United States. For women of color or who are from Indigenous communities, barriers to social and economic livelihoods are strong and can lead to social exclusion (weaker access to services from banks and health care) and economic exclusion (limited access to the formal economy and reliance on sub-standard social supports).
