Abstract

Composition in a work of art describes the juxtaposition or balance of visual fixation points in a kind of symmetrical order, not in the sense of simple mirror-symmetry, but as a multi-layered process, a fluid symmetry. Comparing three artists across times, an argument will be made for the existence of a fluid symmetry of governing colours and forms. This positioning is logical to artists but may be mesmerizing to viewers. This essay will demonstrate how fundamental biological factors impact both the artist and the viewer, and also set the perimeters for cultural and rational interpretations.
