Abstract

Socialist republicanism in its primary form can be summarised in four themes. They are: (1) A support for social ownership of resources; (2) That in some cases goods should not be for sale; (3) A government needs to have the ability to intervene strategically in economic activity; (4) Equality of outcome with provision of a quality of life for all should be the overriding intent of economic activity. If we believe that the earth’s ecosystem cannot sustain another 250 years of the scale of economic growth and activity that has transpired since the onset of the industrial revolution then we need an alternative to short-termist market based consumption driven economies. A socialist approach is a core element to ensuring a just transition as states and communities embrace the need to tackle the climate crisis. James Connolly describes the socialist republic as “the point of departure”, and at the stumbling beginning of the twenty-first century this is still a valid analysis.
