Abstract

Algorithmic selection forms the techno-functional core of a number of Internet services and finds application in several subdomains of the media sector such as journalism, entertainment, advertising, Internet search and on social networking platforms. Algorithm-based, data-driven, automated services affect market structures, business models and revenues in the media industry. This chapter explores how algorithmic selection is used for content production, content distribution, content moderation and advertising. It analyses the market developments and the risks that accompany algorithmic selection in these domains. The analysis demonstrates that algorithmic selection is a factor of media change and poses several challenges for media change management, research and governance.
