Abstract

In this chapter the different methods for the analysis of data from a stepped wedge trial are discussed. These methods contain the comparison of different arms, the comparison of groups with a different number of intervention measurement, and the comparison of transitions. The complexity of the analysis of data from a stepped wedge trial is that the effect of the intervention is partly within the subject (the subject receives both the intervention and the control condition) and partly between the subjects (at a certain time point, there are subjects who receive the intervention, and there are subjects who receive the control condition). This has important consequences for the estimation of the treatment effect. Besides this, also the time that the intervention is delivered is different for the different subjects, so this should also be taken into account when the intervention effect is estimated. Because of the complexity of the analyses, this chapter contains two extensive examples.
