In: The Representation of Economics in Cinema

Abstract

Economic films are experiencing a moment of splendor. Ironically, the origin of this bonanza is the financial crisis of 2008 and the subsequent Great Recession. Cinema has become increasingly interested in explaining how the economy works and has attempted to craft a narrative of this period of economic turmoil. This chapter revises this prolific harvest of excellent economic films. But the Great Recession was not the first economic crisis to appear in cinema. This chapter also discusses the film portrayals of the Great Depression of the 1930s and of the climate of economic insecurity that plagued the West during the oil crises of the 1970s and early 1980s.
