Abstract

This chapter presents the second part of the roadmap for realizing the shift from sustainability-as-usual to awakened sustainability. It explores how to make the changes in the four conditions (law, markets, social norms, and organizational design) that are key to achieving awakened sustainability. The chapter draws on the importance of mental models in system transformation, suggesting that the necessary changes in the four conditions will need to be supported by a shift in the mental model dominating corporate sustainability, from “shareholder capitalism 2.0” to “sustainability first, NOW.” It proceeds with a detailed theory of change built on the power of narratives of transformative change to win the “battle of narratives,” which would result eventually in the desired changes in the mental model and consequently in the four conditions. Finally, the shift to awakened sustainability is connected to the different transformation pathways presented in Chapter 5 .
