Abstract

Intellectual property theft is a major Western grievance pertaining to trade with China. The specifics of this issue arise as a result of trade under differing institutional structures and are elaborated in this chapter. Because of institutional differences, intellectual property issues will continue to plague this trading relationship unless fundamental institutional changes are made. Because of China’s unique governmental structure, much trade and even academic collaboration with China fuels its military expansion and assertiveness, surveillance capacities, and domestic repression. This chapter’s critical role is to elaborate on the trade-related issues that are most critical for the United States and other Western countries to address and to link them to the institutional structures in both countries.
