Abstract

Why look back over the lives and ideals of utilitarian pioneers? I have three reasons.The first is to ask why the culture of their times leads philosophers to neglect certain issues in favor of others. Why, for example, was the naturalism of ancient Greeks like Democritus and Epicurus left on a back burner for two thousand years until reinvented by enlightenment thinkers, of whom Hutcheson and Hume are examples in this book? Why are the various proponents of modern psychological approaches to studying happiness reinventing the wheels already invented by such early utilitarians? Why are modern philosophers equally reluctant to learn that modern economists no longer identify utility with happiness? Could it be that those who neglect history are compelled to repeat it?
