Abstract

The deficiency of the country regarding its manufacturing base is related with a series of facts that show how in a changing world a balanced corporate landscape is directly related with key dimensions of governance and institutional quality, as well as the efficiency of public policies like education. It is argued that only with the establishment of a balanced corporate landscape the country will be able to prosper, and this can only be achieved with progress on all fronts. A more prominent role for those “making things” is strongly correlated with the creation of such a balanced landscape, as they are more strongly affected by the strengths of weaknesses of the institutions and regulatory quality of a country. An attempt to move the country in such direction will, in turn, require a close cooperation between the public and private sector. Getting all these issues right needs to happen at the same time. Piecemeal advances will not suffice to ensure the desired results.
