My Outcomes-Based Financing Journey

Abstract

For this chapter, I’m going to walk with you on my own journey with outcomes-based financing. It begins in England and ends in South Africa, where I now live. This journey recounts my experience building a social impact bond. It was an incredible learning experience and proved the true impact potential of creative financing. I will preface this story, however, by saying that social impact bonds (SIBs) and development impact bonds (DIBs) are never the easiest and rarely the most useful structure for most founders and funders. They are difficult for a founder to implement, as social impact bonds require multiple stakeholders and complex contracting. Nevertheless, they’re an important innovation in the world of impact investing and they are relevant to the broader narrative of this book, which focuses on making venture finance work better for a larger group of stakeholders.
