The Competitive Disadvantaged: How Competitions Can Contribute to Poverty Elimination in Paraguay

Abstract

This chapter presents a case study on how gamification is being used in Paraguay to address different aspects of multidimensional poverty. Fundación Paraguaya (FP), a social enterprise, has been organizing competitions where participants vie with one another to improve on deprivations such as poor dental health, the lack of a modern bathroom, or dilapidated public spaces. The case study shows that many participants indeed manage to overcome specific deprivations. However, dropout rates are often high. An analysis of the competition design using the Octalysis framework suggests that the high dropout rates might be the result of not making effective use of all core drives for human motivation. The analysis also reveals some limitations of the framework for programs addressing poverty. The case study concludes that despite these limitations, gamification has the potential to contribute to poverty elimination, as it can be effective to mobilize locally available resources.
