Abstract

Describing the achieved focus of a company is one thing, but finding how companies arrived at their given focus through an analysis of their focus journey offers an important aspect of understanding the practices adopted by the researched companies. Without that understanding, the experience does not become transferable to other settings. Many of the companies analyzed found their eventually adopted focus only after years of experience, or some form of trial and error. In the process, companies also engaged in divesting other parts of their business to create the needed resources to expand into the chosen focus. The chapter also introduces the concept of multiple layers of focus, as many firms employ more than one focus practice to combine into a single approach. The chapter ends with lessons from the focus journeys of the researched companies.
