Abstract

Life expectancy at birth (LEB) has risen rapidly around the world over the last century due to a number of factors such as reductions in infant mortality, rising living standards, improved lifestyles, and better education, as well as advances in healthcare and medicine. Although Russia ranks 11th in the world for overall GDP according to the IMF, it ranks as low as 110th in the WHO’s latest World Life Expectancy ranking (2015). The current LEB of 71.8 years is about 8 years lower than the OECD average (80.2 years) and significantly lower than economically well-developed countries, such as the United States, Japan, or Germany, or compared with countries with similar income levels such as Turkey or Mexico. In spite of recent gains, Russia even trails behind countries with much lower per capita incomes levels, such as Brazil (74.8 years) and China (76 years) (Fig. 24.1)
