How “More Europe” Can Heal the Current Institutional Divergence Hurting in Particular Weaker Member States Like Greece

Abstract

The need for “more Europe” stands out today in an international environment contaminated by populism, authoritarianism, and demagogy. Consequently, one has to specify the domains that henceforth Europe has to concentrate on in a positive way, explaining practically and with pragmatism the reasons for “more Europe” when confronting destructive political radicalism both in core and peripheral member states. In particular, Europe has to deliver concrete benefits that citizens can see in many more dimensions of their daily professional and business life, but also at the same moment give them true and clearly visible democratic control over their representation in EU bodies and the way EU law is shaped and implemented. But to accept such an advance, Europe has first to recognize critical flaws regarding its current economic and political architecture and, then, proceed to policies adequate to restore the dynamism of the European dream which will lead to a more, efficient and just, Europe. More democracy, both visibly and in substance, will be then the way to gather support, and ensure a renewed dynamism, for a closer Union.
