Abstract

Zusammenfassung „Wer ist Olli Rehn“, fragte der belgische Minister Paul Magnette 2012. Er bezog sich dabei wahrscheinlich nicht auf mich persönlich, sondern auf mich als Vertreter der Europäischen Kommission. Das Mandat der Kommission in der Wirtschaftsregierung wird gemeinsam von den EU-Mitgliedstaaten und dem Europäischen Parlament erlassen, daher rührt ihre Legitimität. Ich sollte während der Schuldenkrise der Eurozone nicht zu den Feuerwehrleuten Europas gehören. Mein Heimatland Finnland war noch nicht einmal Mitglied der EU/EG, als der Euro 1990–1992 konzipiert wurde. In kleineren Staaten wird der Wert der europäischen Integration besser verstanden: In der EU ist Macht nicht das einzige Recht. Die Eurokrise wurde für alle, die viele Jahre in ihrem Epizentrum verbrachten, zu einer persönlichen Belastungsprobe.
