Abstract

Although all individuals with disabilities face barriers to entering the labour market, women with disabilities are particularly vulnerable due to their multilayered identities as individuals who are female and also experience disability. This chapter utilizes an intersectionality framework to explore the unique barriers to employment and career development experienced by women with disabilities. These barriers are examined across various stages and components of career development including childhood experiences and aspirations, education and training, workforce experiences and career advancement. Additionally, we provide recommendations for empowering women with disabilities to fully participate in the workforce through case examples and additional resources.
