Abstract

Art 27 CRPD envisages “a labour market and work environment that is open, inclusive and accessible to persons with disabilities”. This chapter explores the creation of jobs for learning disabled people with learning disabled people. The project, ‘Learning by doing together’, used participatory action research to create jobs for learning disabled people within the services that learning disabled people use. The project further demonstrates the potential of learning disabled people, their representative organizations and their supporters to find innovative ways of supporting people into work. The chapter will explore what this discrete action research project teaches us about the legal regime concerning the inclusion of learning disabled people within employment in the UK. It sheds light on the limitations and possibilities of the Equality Act 2010 and considers wider ramifications for the promotion of inclusive employment more generally.
