Cultural Considerations for Effective Six Sigma Teams

Abstract

An excellent definition of culture is by Schein (2010), who said that culture is simply the way that people have agreed to do things in a group. The groups discussed in this chapter are organizational, professional, and societal. It is essential that these cultures be considered before starting Six Sigma implementation and when working in Six Sigma teams. Cross-cultural problems arise because the differences and resulting complications are not acknowledged, accepted, and solved. The final section of this chapter is a discussion of methods to make changes that may be needed in culture before a Six Sigma team can be effective.
