Abstract

This chapter is the first of four chapters that capture the key aspects of entering into the practice of organizational development (OD), diagnosis, data collection, and data analysis. These four activities represent the first four stages of the OD process. The entering stage sparks the start of the OD process and is typically considered one of the most important stages. It sets the foundation for all other aspects of the change process. More specifically, this chapter identifies the key activities to be considered when ‘entering’ into the OD process. These activities include clarifying the need for OD, identifying all of the relevant stakeholders in the OD process, assessing the readiness levels of the organization for change, planning levels of participation within the OD process, and selecting the OD practitioners to guide the process. These activities are critically evaluated to establish its importance as the foundation of the OD process. Each activity in the ‘entering’ stage is further rationalized to fully understand its role within the broader OD process.
