Abstract

This chapter is the first of seven chapters that capture the key considerations when developing and implementing specific types of organizational-level interventions. Developing and implementing organizational interventions is the fifth stage of the OD (organizational development) process. In this chapter, organizational-level theories are explored in comprehensive detail. Organizational theories can provide overarching guidelines for understanding the interactions between organizations and the external environments within which they operate. Such an understanding is critically important given that organizational interventions are largely aimed at developing and implementing planned change responses to environmental shifts. Over time, while there are various organizational theories developed, the most popular organizational theories will be described and critically evaluated in this chapter. The role of such theories in the development and implementation of organizational-level OD interventions are also assessed. Finally, the main types of organizational-level interventions will be introduced and the goals of such interventions will be highlighted.
