Abstract

Wendy Smith has been the force behind organizing and enriching the conceptual boundaries of the notion of paradox. She has drawn from the fundamental theories relevant to organizational change such as dialectics, duality, and process theory in order to conceptualize paradox as a metatheory, alternate to the contingency view characterizing most of organizational scholarship. Her insights on paradox can be traced to the early influences in her life and graduate studies, as well as mentors who informed her thinking. In addition to building a robust theory of paradox, Smith has built a thriving community of paradox scholars. She sees this burgeoning interest in paradox as just the beginning of the rich scholarship that is possible around grand challenges, socio-materiality, and organizational change.
