Abstract

This chapter starts the second part of the book, which is dedicated to the design of organizational (chart) structures. The purpose of this chapter is first, to remind the reader of the main objectives regarding the design of organizational structures and second, to set out the sequence of the design process. To derive a sound process sequence, chapter 8 explores the vital distinction between primary and secondary functions, compares a bottom-up with a top-down design approach, and analyzes the vital role of the organization’s strategy and purpose in the design process. From this, chapter 8 develops a process model for the design of organizational structures that guides the readers through the entire second part of this volume. Finally, chapter 8 discusses what implications Polanyi’s insights regarding the tacit dimension organizations have on the design and change of organizational structures.
