(Article I.14.) A Diluted Al-Karajī In Abbacus Mathematics

Abstract

In several preceding Maghreb colloques I have argued, from varying perspectives, that the algebra of the Italian abbacus school was inspired neither from Latin algebraic writings (the translations of al-Khwārizmī and the Liber abbaci) nor directly from authors like al-Khwārizmī, Abū Kāmil and al-Karajī; instead, its root in the Arabic world is a level of algebra (probably coupled to mu‘āmalāt mathematics) which until now has not been scrutinized systematically. Going beyond this negative characterization I shall argue on the present occasion that abbacus algebra received indirect inspiration from al-Karajī. As it will turn out, however, this inspiration is consistently strongly diluted, and certainly indirect.
