Abstract

Through a thick snowstorm in late March, my good friend John drove me down to Denver to meet with Dr. Ari Ballonoff at St. Joseph’s Hospital. Our mutual friend Kent came along to lend additional moral support and advocacy as needed. Dr. Ballonoff is a radiation oncologist, and although I don’t have cancer, a favored treatment for brain AVMs like mine is to deliver a precise, high-concentration dose of radiation directly into the tangle of blood vessels. This is the same way doctors treat certain types of cancers, including brain tumors. The radiosurgery instrument typically used is called a Gamma Knife.
