New Startup Ecosystems and the Innovation Hub

Abstract

In this chapter, we outline the attributes and mechanisms for building an innovation hub that can be the center of the innovation ecosystem. Innovation hubs are not simply an accelerator, as many suppose. Instead it combines elements of a mature innovation ecosystem together with elements of accelerators. We explore the full model and talk about the mechanisms for building out the more complete innovation hub ecosystem. Every accelerator has been created with a similar but different mix of criteria for entrance and services and assistance offered. Some accelerators have built elements of an innovation hub into their acceleration models. This means that variation between technology acceleration environments exists. However, there is no transparent classification system that describes the various levels of services and entrance criteria. As part of this, we propose two classification systems based on models that are familar from software engineering. The first is for the innovation hubs and the second is for the startup ecosystem itself.
