Abstract

In Chapter 1 we showed that the science of statistics is concerned with the interpretation of experimental results from random systems. One of the most important tools used in the development of the subject is a branch of mathematics called the Theory of Probability. The reader who is merely interested in understanding how and when to use statistical methods will need very little indeed of this vast branch of mathematics, and the sketch given in this chapter will suffice. For others who wish to pursue a study of the Theory of Probability to a deeper level, there are some excellent books available, such as Feller (1957), Gnedenko (1962), Loéve (1960) and Parzen (1960).
