Abstract

The book is coming to a close, but I recognize how many important results remain untouched. This is not surprising, as a detailed description of the latest applications of topology to physics would require many heavy volumes. Nevertheless, it is desirable that the reader should get some idea about the tendencies in modern research while remaining within the framework of elementary topology of the text. We shall discuss certain results, possible prospects and unsolved problems. The treatment is necessarily a summary. Clearly the choice of themes reflects the tastes and work of the author.
