Recovery and Rehabilitation of Adult Aphasic Patients

Abstract

If we compare the amount of knowledge we have acquired in aphasia with the amount of knowledge we still need to acquire, the latter must be regarded as the more sizable portion. In contrast with some of the other disorders speech—language pathologists deal with, at least the cause of this communication disorder is known. However, although the cause of aphasia can be assumed to be brain damage affecting the hemisphere dominant for language (usually the left), there is a great deal more we don’t know. We have as yet to understand the answers to the following questions: What brain mechanisms are responsible for the different symptoms seen in aphasic patients? What is the neurological basis for language recovery when it does take place? Are aphasic symptoms due to the language remaining in the left hemisphere or due to the limited ability of the right hemisphere to perform? What is the most effective method of language therapy? What are the factors that can predict an individual patient’s prognosis for language recovery?
