Abstract

After the work of Nevanlinna, Bloch wrote a fundamental paper where, as he says (my translation): There was no doubt a priori that to Borel’s theorem there should corre-spond theorems in finite terms, just as the Landau theorem corresponds to Picard’s theorem. This results from a principle which can be stated as fol-lows: Nihil est in infinito quod non prius fuerit in finito. But what were these theorems? This was not at all clear at first sight.
