Abstract

It has always been customary to invite a number of outstanding mathematicians to deliver lectures before plenary sessions of international congresses. These invited lectures have gone under different names at different congresses: for consistency they are all listed here as Plenary Lectures. An asterisk following a speaker’s name indicates that he was also a plenary speaker at a later congress. His second plenary address is indicated by two asterisks, and so on. An (R) following a title indicates that the talk was originally given in Russian. Because of typographical limitations all Russian titles have had to be translated into English or German.
