Abstract

The second international mathematical congress in Canada took place on the opposite side of the North American continent from the first. The city of Vancouver had been the last stop on the great transcontinental train trip offered to mathematicians attending the congress in Toronto in 1924. Half a century later more than eight times as many mathematicians gathered on the scenic campus of the University of British Columbia for their seventh congress since the end of World War II.
