Abstract

I BELONG TO THE ANCIENT and Honorable Society of Pi Watchers. The function of this society is to promote, to collect and to disseminate information about the number pi. There are no formal meetings, no newsletters or regular publication of minutes. On the other hand, anyone can join. New members of the society might very well read my status report on pi, which was written in 1961 and can be found in Chapter 17 of The Lore of Large Numbers. Another recent document of prime importance to pi watchers is the article by D. Shanks and J. W. Wrench, Jr., entitled “Calculation of π to 100,000 Decimals,” which can be found in the January 1962 issue of Mathematics of Computation.
