Abstract

SOME 2,400 YEARS AGO, a Greek philosopher by the name of Anaxagoras was foolhardy enough to claim that there were other planetary systems in the universe besides our own. He went further to say that other planetary systems were also inhabited by human beings. At the time he proclaimed these views to the Athenian citizens, the Earth was still thought to be the center of the universe and the sun and moon were considered to be deities. For teaching such revolutionary beliefs, Anaxagoras was condemned to death, although the sentence was later commuted to banishment.
