Abstract

Ich stamme noch aus dem großen neunzehnten Jahrhundert und hatte dann das weitere Glück, während meiner Studienzeit in Berlin und Göttingen durch hervorragende Persönlichkeiten in der damals lebendigen Tradition aus der Glanzzeit der Mathematik erzogen zu werden. Von diesen akademischen Lehrern hat mich besonders Edmund Landau beeinflußt, dessen Sorgfalt in der Vorbereitung von Vorlesungen und schriftlichen Veröffentlichungen mir dauernd ein unerreichtes Vorbild geblieben ist. „Er war der pflichttreueste von uns allen“ sagte Hilbert zu mir, als ich 1938 die Nachricht vom Tode Landaus überbrachte. Jetzt, 30 Jahre später, seien die folgenden Zeilen seinem Andenken gewidmet.
