Abstract

The effect of multiple disintegration of solids under intensive stress action such as compression & shear (ISACS) was discovered in 70-th years in N.N. Semenov Institute of Chemical Physics of Russian Academy of Sciences at the investigation of mechanochemical reactions in some polymeric and composit materials. The first experimental investigations of this phenomenon were also carried out there (see the review of Nikol’skii and Wol’fson1). Initially the interest in physicochemical processes proceeding in polymeric systems subjected to ISACS, was caused by the fact that the velocity of chemical reaction can increase for several orders of magnitude under these conditions and, in some cases, the reaction does not proceed at all within the same temperature range in the absence of ISACS. The experimental data accumulated till now demonstrate, however, that in a solid-state matrix of polymers and polymeric composites subjected to ISACS, not only the mechanochemical processes, but also some other physicochemical ones can proceed in an unconventional way.
