Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to explain prerequisites for a theory of partially ordered monads and for a categorical treatment of the foundations of topology. We expect familiarity with basic notions and concepts of category theory — e.g. limits, co-limits, functors, natural transformations and adjoint situations. Most of this material can be found in standard books on category theory (cf. [74, 41]). Here we only recall important properties of (epi, extremal mono)-categories and monads which we frequently need in the following chapters and sections.
