Abstract

The impact of World War II on the practice and theory of statistics was substantial. Major new statistical developments occurred as part of the wartime activities, especially in the United Kingdom and the United States. The paper provides some background to these developments and serves as an introduction to a longer and more detailed description by Barnard and Plackett on Statistics in the United Kingdom, 1939–45.
