Abstract

The development of the rotating cylinder electrode (RCE) from its position as a laboratory research tool to the basis of an efficient industrial reactor is discussed. The characteristic features and operational parameters are identified. Several levels of design complexity may be distinguished, ranging from a simple undivided (batch) reactor to a sophisticated reactor which is potentiostatically controlled, divided and designed for truly continuous operation. A range of applications is reviewed with particular reference to the Eco-Cell. The reactor is seen to be useful for metals removal and production in various fields, including effluent treatment, hydrometallurgy, photographic processing and precious metals recovery. The existing and potential uses of the RCE reactor in fields other than metal extraction and production are also briefly considered.
