Abstract

“Algebra is fit enough to help us make discoveries, but not fit to bequeath them to posterity.” This sentiment, shared by many rigorous seventeenth century mathematicians, aptly characterizes the subservient place algebra held within mathematics for centuries. It is difficult to conceive even the most ardent nineteenth century champion of algebra suggesting that “algebra is the foundation and tool of all mathematics,” as Emmy Noether would do in 1931 [1].
