Abstract

The two-year college system in America is essentially unique. Other countries have educational institutions with goals that overlap those of America's two-year colleges, butthey tend to have a more limited focus and are not nearly soubiquitous as two-year colleges in this country. Indeed, these facts are, to a large extent, the raison d’ etre of the present conference. The rapid growth of the two-year college system and the wide diversity of goals among the various schools makes it clear that their mission is not well defined. Hopefully, one result of the present conference will be a clarification or redefinition of the appropriate role and mission of American two-year colleges that will be helpful one result of the present conference will be a clarification or redefinition of the appropriate role and mission of American two-year colleges that will be helpful not only to existing institutions but also to those to be established in the near future.
