SSA as Multidimensional Scaling

Abstract

SSA is considered in a special form known as mult idimensional scaling (MDS). MDS attempts to arrive at scale units for a system of substantively meaningful stimulus dimensions. We consider two examples interpreting MDS as a theory of judgmental behavior which takes the Minkowski distance formula as a psychological composition rule. In two applications, it is predicted that similarity evaluations of simple geometric figures can be explained by adding their physical coordinate differences over the dimensions. Different Minkowski formulas and different coordinate systems with different units are explored.
