Abstract

In the preceding section, we laid a foundation for the time domain analysis of input-output linear systems. In the present section and the one which follows, we focus our attention on a collection of ideas and techniques which comprise the so called frequency domain approach to the analysis of time-invariant input-output systems. Frequency domain techniques have a long and colorful history; they are rooted mathematically in the functional analytic methods of theoretical physics which have developed over the last century or so, but their contribution to the genesis of the “systems approach” to engineering problems, particularly electrical ones, cannot be overestimated. One of their principal selling points is that they appeal strongly to empirical intuition; the meaning of this last comment should be made clear in what follows.
