Topological Background

Abstract

In this chapter we do two things. First, we introduce notation and terminology that we will use throughout the book. Second, we discuss a number of topological ideas that fall into a “grey zone”; they do not form part of the central subject matter of this book (extensions and absolutes), and they sometimes do not appear in a typical graduate level course in point-set topology. A familiarity with these ideas is necessary to what follows, so a detailed discussion of them is given here. The topologically sophisticated reader may wish to skip this material and to refer to it when the need arises.
