Eutocius’ Text of Eratosthenes: A Thesis of U. von Wilamowitz

Abstract

The document that Eutocius reproduces as a transcript of a scientific communication by Eratosthenes to his patron King Ptolemy is of greater literary than technical interest. On the geometric principle of the construction and its mechanical realization, Eutocius’ text supplements only in subtle details the shorter account preserved by Pappus. But if authentic, it would be the most substantial fragment that survives of Eratosthenes’ writing.
