Abstract

An appropriate sequel to the preceding discussion of Arabic adaptations of the Dimension of the Circle would be to examine similar efforts in the Latin tradition. Indeed, Gerard’s version LG spawned numerous paraphrases, with a variety of technical and exegetical additions. These have been edited and annotated by Marshall Clagett, and I will discuss aspects of their textual tradition in the next chapter.1 For the present, I will take up another writing in the Latin tradition of Archimedes, the tract De curvis superficiebus, a more advanced work combining elements of the Archimedean measurements of the circle and the sphere. The aim will be to establish its provenance as a translation from the Greek, and then to place its prototype within the ancient geometric tradition.2 Of specific interest will be the relation of both the Latin and the Greek forms of the work to the tradition of Archimedes' Dimension of the Circle and to other works, in particular, the anonymous isoperimetric writing extant in Greek in the Introduction to the Syntaxis and in Latin through a literal translation as Defiguris ysoperimetris.3
