Eutocius’ Text of Dimension of the Circle

Abstract

In the preceding chapters we have collated the primary medieval Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin versions of Dimension of the Circle and retrieved their lost prototypes, the Arabic AF* and the Greek DC*. From a comparison with the extant Greek text DC, we have perceived that DC is an edited version of DC*, which in its turn is an adaptation of Archimedean materials in Theon (T) and other commentators. We now consider the parallel evidence from Eutocius. As an inspection of passages from his Archimedes commentaries reveals, Eutocius did not utilize a very old form of the text for his source, as Heiberg assumed, but rather DC*.1
