Abstract

Our ability to reconstruct the editorial development of the second and third propositions of Dimension of the Circle is limited, since alternative ancient versions comparable to those we possess from Pappus and Theon for prop. 1 are lacking.1 Citations and applications of the results proved in props. 2 and 3, however, can be gleaned from Hero, Theon, and other sources, and these suggest certain ways in which the extant DC represents a text form different from that circulating in the early period. Furthermore, a collation of the versions in Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin confirms our previous findings on the literalness and accuracy of the medieval translators. It also emerges that their text of props. 2 and 3 differed far less from the extant DC than was the case for prop. 1.
